Author Biography
John Allen Wyeth was born in Missionary Station, Marshall, Alabama. After completing his education at LaGrange Military Academy in Alabama and earning his M.D. from the University of Louisville in 1869, Wyeth pursued further studies under mentors in various medical centers across Europe. During the Civil War, Wyeth served in the Confederate Army, participating in numerous engagements and being held captive for fifteen months. Upon returning to civilian life, he established himself as a prominent visiting and consulting surgeon in New York from 1878 to 1897. In 1881, Wyeth founded the New York Polyclinic Medical School and Hospital, the first postgraduate medical school in the United States. As its senior professor of surgery and president from 1893 to 1922, he shaped the institution into a cornerstone of medical education, influencing generations of physicians, including the Mayo Brothers, who modeled their clinic after it. Wyeth's innovations in surgical techniques, notably his "Wyeth's Method" of bloodless amputation and joint procedures, revolutionized medical practice. Wyeth died of a heart attack in 1922 and was posthumously inducted into the Alabama Hall of Fame in 1954.
