James Danelly Anthony was born in Abbeville, South Carolina. He earned his licensure to preach in 1846. Anthony then served Methodist churches in Alabama and Georgia from 1847 to 1898, with intermittent periods of farming and teaching. During the Civil War, he served as a pastor in Sandersville, Georgia, and is credited with convincing General Sherman not to burn the town. Anthony also edited the Jasper weekly Mountain Eagle for several years and the Herald and Georgian of Sandersville, Georgia, in the 1870s, all while continuing his ministerial duties. In 1875, Anthony authored a history of Cherokee County for the Gadsden Times while he was serving a Methodist church in Gadsden, Ala. He also wrote an autobiography with a few original sermons before his death in 1899.
